TPU Membrane Properties & Applications

TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) waterproof breathable membrane is a flexible and eco-friendly material designed for applications requiring both waterproof protection and air permeability. It is widely used in footwear, outdoor apparel and lightweight waterproof products.

Breathability & Water-Pressure Capability

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between TPU and ePTFE membrane?

TPU is an elastomeric film that transports moisture through hydrophilic diffusion, while ePTFE uses a microporous structure. TPU is more flexible and lower-cost; ePTFE offers higher temperature resistance (260°C vs 80°C) and better chemical inertness.

Can TPU membrane achieve IP68?

Standard TPU membranes are rated IP65–IP67. For IP68 applications (continuous immersion), we recommend ePTFE membrane. However, custom TPU formulations with thicker films can approach IP68 under specific conditions.

Is TPU membrane recyclable?

Yes. Unlike cross-linked polymers, TPU is a thermoplastic — it can be re-melted and reprocessed. This makes it an eco-friendly choice for sustainability-conscious brands.

What adhesive options are available?

Standard option is acrylic PSA (pressure-sensitive adhesive) for easy peel-and-stick installation. Custom options include silicone adhesive, epoxy, or heat-bonding for direct lamination to textiles or plastics.

Can TPU membrane be ultrasonic welded?

Yes. TPU is thermoplastic and can be ultrasonic-welded, heat-sealed, or thermally laminated. This is a key advantage over ePTFE, which cannot be welded and requires adhesive bonding.

What is the typical service life of TPU membrane?

In normal operating conditions (-30°C to +80°C, no strong chemical exposure), TPU membrane maintains performance for 5–8 years. UV exposure may cause gradual yellowing but does not significantly affect waterproof/breathable performance within this period.
